New coercive control legislation passes in Queensland | ABC News
Coercive control will become a crime in Queensland after historic laws passed state parliament.
Adults will face a new standalone offence – expected to come into force next year – that carries a jail sentence of up to 14 years.
Coercive control is an often "insidious" pattern of controlling, isolating and manipulative behaviour within a relationship, and can include verbal abuse, financial control, emotional abuse and social isolation.
The legislation passed following a debate, during which MPs detailed personal stories, including Labor MP Jonty Bush, who spoke about her sister's murder "through an act of domestic and family violence when she was just 19 years old".
